GITA-Africa Officially Launches to Empower Girls Through Tourism
Kampala, Uganda | 24 April 2026 — The Girls in Tourism Association - Africa (GITA-Africa) was officially launched on 24th April 2026 at the Buganda Heritage and Tourism Board Conference Hall in Kampala. Marking the beginning of a new platform dedicated to empowering girls and young women through tourism while contributing to the growth and development of the tourism industry.
The launch attracted approximately 120 guests, bringing together representatives from government institutions, tourism associations, conservation organizations, hospitality establishments, cultural institutions, educational institutions, media houses, tourism entrepreneurs, students, young professionals, and well-wishers from across the sector.
The event was organized to formally introduce GITA-Africa's vision, mission, objectives, and planned programmes while creating a platform for dialogue around the role of girls and young women within tourism.
Pre-Launch Activities
The day began with a Buganda Heritage Tour organized in partnership with the Buganda Heritage and Tourism Board. Participants visited key cultural and historical sites including Bulange, Kabaka's Palace, and Mengo, providing an opportunity to appreciate the significance of culture and heritage within tourism development.
The heritage experience was followed by a conservation activity conducted in partnership with Good Forest Foundation Uganda, during which 50 trees were planted. The activity reflected GITA-Africa's commitment to environmental sustainability and reinforced the organization's belief that tourism development and conservation should go hand in hand.
Following the daytime activities, participants reconvened at the Buganda Heritage and Tourism Board Conference Hall for the official launch ceremony.
Official Launch Ceremony
The launch was officiated by Prof. Jacqueline Besigye Nyiraciza, Commissioner for Museums and Monuments at the Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities, who served as Guest of Honour.
"In her remarks, she commended the initiative for creating opportunities for girls and young women while emphasizing the importance of culture, heritage, and youth participation in tourism development. She encouraged young people to position themselves as future leaders within the industry and to actively contribute towards preserving and promoting Uganda's tourism assets."
The event was hosted by Gabriela Akere, Miss Tourism Uganda Second Runner-Up 2025, whose vibrant presentation helped guide participants through the day's activities and programme.
Panel Discussion
One of the key highlights of the launch was a panel discussion moderated by Zakia Lucky, bringing together experienced professionals from different segments of the tourism industry. The launch also showed empowerment as all MC's were young ladies building up their career.

Panelists shared personal experiences, professional insights, and practical advice, encouraging participants to embrace tourism as a viable career path while highlighting the importance of innovation, resilience, professionalism, and continuous learning.
The interactive session also allowed participants to engage directly with the panelists through questions and discussions, creating a valuable learning and networking opportunity.
Media Coverage
The launch received extensive media attention, with more than fifteen media personnel covering the event through print, broadcast, online, and digital platforms. The media presence significantly amplified the visibility of the organization and its mission, helping introduce GITA-Africa to a wider audience within Uganda's tourism sector and beyond.
